Cook King
King Alfred more than just cakes!
King Alfred is probably Winchester's most famous inhabitant. He wasn't born here – he was actually born in Wantage, Oxford – but he made Winchester the capital of his kingdom of Wessex. His iconic statute dominates The Broadway, stern features, his hand resting on a mighty sword. He reigned as King of Wessex from 23 April 871 – 26 October 899. Alfred is the only English King named "The Great". He is revered as the father of the English Navy and he is particularly famous for his reform of the legal system and support for education.
Alfred also laid out the street plan of Winchester still evident today and based on the old Roman Town of Venta Belgarum. It is hardly surprising that his name crops up throughout the city. Until recently, Winchester's University was known as King Alfred's College. Other links are the King Alfred public house, Saxon Road, Hyde, the King Alfred Youth Activity Centre at St Thomas' Church in Southgate Street, King Alfred Buses, the King Alfred Hall, part of Winchester Guildhall, and many street names such as King Alfred's Terrace.
Of course, we learn first about Alfred through the story of how he burnt the cakes! This popular legend, originating from 12th century chronicles, tells how Alfred was given shelter by a peasant woman who, unaware of his identity, left him to watch some cakes she had left cooking on the fire. Too busy thinking about the problems of his kingdom, Alfred accidentally let the cakes burn and was taken to task by the woman upon her return. Upon realising who he was, the woman was horrified that she had reprimanded her own king but Alfred insisted that he was the one at fault.
Alfred was buried in the original Minster in the city and later his remains were dug up and reburied in today's Winchester Cathedral. Over time their location was lost so now if you want to see Alfred's memorial in Winchester, you must, as they say, look about you!
