What is the Glycemic Index Anyway? by Caterina Christakos
The Glycemic Index has found renewed popularity lately. You may want to know though that this is not an original concept. It has been used in diets in France for quiet a long time before seeing this surge here in the states.
Millions of people search the internet with the question "How can I lose weight?" Most people believe that weight loss must be a grueling process based on deprivation. This could not be further from the truth.
Yes, everyone tells you to increase the amount of exercise that you are getting. And yes this is true but you do not have to join a gym to do get an enjoyable workout. In fact many people, a high percentage in fact, sign up and never use their membership. We have heard people say that they will go to the gym when they are in a little better shape. Why start your exercise program out with embarrassment. If having others see you in your workout outfit embarrasses you then there are far more enjoyable ways of getting your work out in and losing weight without the damage to your self esteem.
Here are just a few examples: Climb the stairs at work. Go for enjoyable walks. You may actually get to know your neighbors this way. Or go walk in one of the state parks.
At home, you can enjoy exercising with Richard Simmons and be bopping to the oldies. Or how about jumping in the pool and doing water aerobics to your favorite tunes. The essential component is to get your body moving.
Now lets get to what you really want to know - what to eat. Any diet that has you passing out from starvation has no chance of lasting for long and will undoubtably cause health problems. Drinking herbal teas all day without an ounce of actual nutrition will do simply one thing - cause your metabolism to grind to a halt. Can you see how foolish this is?
One method of weight loss that I love is the glycemic index. It is one of the few methods of weight loss that actually lets you eat real food that tastes delicious while you lose weight. You can even get an app for your iphone that will tell you exactly which foods have a low GI rating. Foods that are high on this scale raise your sugar levels. Studies have shown that they can actually cause you to eat up to 30% more!
Surprise surprise high GI means high in sugar. Now low GI foods may not have your favorite sugary fillings but they can be absolutely delicious anyway. There are so many delightful choices.
Here are just a few low GI foods that you can eat without any guilt:
Cherries
Banana cake, made with sugar
Orange juice
Baked artichokes
Beef Brisket
Oranges
Beef Sausage
Beef Stroganoff
Double chocolate muffin by Sara Lee
Short ribs
Blueberries
Strawberries
Whipped Cream with Splenda
Some pastas prepared Al Dente - ( the glycemic index goes up the longer you cook the pasta)
Multi grain bread
Broccoli Soup
Yogurt low- fat
chocolate pound cake
Carrots
Rice, instant
peaches
Mussels
Pears
Plumbs
Shrimp
Baked Brie
Fettuccine
Red Wine
And many more options...
You want to minimize your sugar and your grains. One other thing to keep in mind. If you are going to have something with a high GI then accompany it with something low GI. So if you were going to have a Baguette which has a high index rating then you would want to accompany it with something like cheese, peanut butter or jam.
A GI rating of 55 or below is considered low so when you download an application for your phone or pick up a GI index book from the bookstore it is extremely simple to pick out foods to eat. Whenever you go into a cafe or restaurant, examine the menu then immediately check your Glycemic index application or book. You won't believe how many delicious choices you have. Another wonderful aspect is that these foods tend to be a tad higher in fiber so they leave you feeling satisfied faster. You really will not have the urge to eat too much. There will be times when you will actually willingly skip dessert with no regrets.
Now is watching calories important? If you simply eat reasonably portions and don't go back for seconds you should be fine. As I mentioned there are numerous diet plans out there based on the GI method. Some from the US and some from abroad. Most diets are divided into 2 phases - the dropping weight phase and the let's keep it off phase. Out of all of the weight loss theories that I have personally tried and reviewed the diets based on the GI tend to be the easiest to follow and usually have the yummiest fare.
