Nitrous Oxide Systems In Reality
Your sense of priorities can be worked out pretty readily by the answer to a single question: What is nitrous oxide? If you are a dentist, then yes, it is that stuff that you give to patients as an anesthetic, which leads to them stumbling from your surgery laughing like a schoolboy at the pattern of your wallpaper. If you are a scientist, then yes, it is a chemical compound, colorless and non-flammable, with two atoms of nitrogen to one oxygen. If you are a quiz show participant, it IS laughing gas, take five points and pick a square. If you are a petrol head, however, nitrous oxide is one thing and one thing only – Nitro.
As with many innovations in the world of motor vehicles, Nitrous Oxide came to prominence due to its use in the military. In World War II, it was used to enhance the acceleration of fighter jets to give them an extra burst when zoning in on an enemy. In peace time, however, Nitro is used by drivers in drag races to enhance the acceleration of their modified car, to give them an extra burst of acceleration when zoning in on an enemy. OK, so maybe times have not changed too much.
Ask any teenage boy and he will tell you that with straight road ahead and minimal traffic, Nitrous Oxide will make your exhaust pipe glow blue and give you a burst of speed that will bring you up to the bumper of a car that previously had been so far away that you needed a telescope to see it. In many countries, it is illegal to have nitrous installed in your car as its application is almost invariably going to be dangerous. At such a rate of acceleration, handling is difficult, hazard perception virtually zero and grips merely a philosophical concept. It can also damage or even destroy your engine, as many engines built for commercial cars simply are not equipped to deal with the power boost given by a shot of Nitrous. There is no real practical application for it outside of motor racing, so the priorities of someone looking to hook it up in a road car are viewed with extreme skepticism.
Even if it does not lead to you wrapping your car around a tree, and even if your engine does not disappear in a puff of strangely colorful smoke, nitrous oxide is to be avoided in a road car because it causes engines to overheat. This leads to engine parts melting or warping, and from there the road to a serious accident is so short that eve without nitrous you will find that it takes no time at all to cover.
Among petrol heads, the presence of Nitro in your car is a badge of honor, and this is well and good, as long as you have vast expanses of open terrain or track on which to drive it, and a car that can handle it. For everyone else, though, experience of nitrous oxide is probably best kept to a dentist’s surgery with funny wallpaper.
However, Ford have not just been satisfied to copy Toyota and other manufacturers of hybrid cars. No, they have decided to go one better and design a hybrid engine that is even more efficient than any car ever released to the market. While they may have taken the concept inspiration from the best-selling Toyota Prius, the engineering is all their own.
Ford took an existing engine from one of their combustion models, the four cylinder Ford Escape, and modified it into a hybrid. Hybrid cars have two ways of producing power, an electric motor and a traditional combustion engine.
